Washington, Feb. 5 (CNA) United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Chinese counterpart on Friday that the U.S. and its allies will hold Beijing accountable for its efforts to threaten stability in the Indo-Pacific, including across the Taiwan Strait.
In his first call with China's top foreign policy official Yang Jiechi (楊潔篪), Blinken said the U.S. will continue to stand up for human rights and democratic values, including in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong.
Blinken also pressed Beijing to join the international community in condemning the recent military coup in Myanmar, according to a statement released by the U.S. State Department.
The U.S. and its allies will hold China "accountable for its efforts to threaten stability in the Indo-Pacific, including across the Taiwan Strait, and its undermining of the rules-based international system," Blinken told Yang, the statement said.
In turn, Yang, director of Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, told Blinken during the call that the U.S. should "correct its mistakes, control divergence, and push for healthy bilateral ties with China," according to China's state-run Global Times.
Earlier this week, in a video address to the New York-based National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, Yang called on the U.S. to "strictly abide by the one-China principle and respect China's position and concerns on the Taiwan issue."
In response, State Department spokesman Ned Price said Beijing should "cease its military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taiwan, and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan's democratically elected leadership."
