Washington, Jan. 6 (CNA) The Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs at the U.S. State Department, R. Clarke Cooper, is scheduled to deliver remarks during a U.S. and Taiwan Political-Military Dialogue on Wednesday, according to the State Department.
The meeting will be held via video conference with Cooper scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m. U.S. time, according to the public schedule released on Tuesday.
The State Department, however, did not disclose more details on the meeting nor did it make public the names of the participating Taiwanese officials.
Asked to comment, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokeswoman Joanne Ou (歐江安) said both countries maintain regular communications via various channels to enhance their close cooperation in areas covering politics, economics and security.
However, citing mutual trust, Ou declined to disclose more details about the upcoming meeting.
CNA has learned that the Taiwanese delegation will include MOFA and Ministry of National Defense (MND) officials who will exchange views on bilateral military cooperation, arms sales, and regional situations.
The U.S. and Taiwan Political-Military Dialogue has been in place for years. Cooper himself previously made public one such dialogue in 2019.
In an August 2019 tweet, Cooper shared a photo in which he is shaking hands with Taiwan's then top envoy to the U.S. Stanley Kao (高碩泰).
The post included a message stating that it was good to catch up with Kao in order to "recommit to a U.S. and Taiwan Political-Military Dialogue to promote peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and region."
