Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) visited a wing of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Air Force on Tuesday and encouraged the troops to perform well so that "groundless rumors" about Taiwan's military "collapse on themselves."

In an address to the 6th Combined Wing of Taiwan's Air Force, Tsai said the wing's work is hard because it is responsible for air and ocean surveillance and also assists in transporting the injured and those who live on Taiwan's offshore islands.

"I believe that when people in our country see your sacrifices and hard work, they will believe that the Republic of China military is a steel force," Tsai said.

This trust needs to be cultivated, however, Tsai said, "especially in the face of China's diplomatic offensives and military coercion, as well as the actions of people with bad intentions."

In the face of these threats, the ROC military need to perform even better and show its conviction in protecting the country, so that "baseless rumors collapse on themselves," she said.

Although Tsai did not specify the rumors she was thinking of or who these "people with bad intentions" were, she may have been referring to retired general and former Commander of the Army Chen Ting-chung (陳廷寵).

At a Military Academy celebration on Sept. 29, Chen said in his speech, "I am Chinese."

He also said that Taiwan's military currently has "zero" combat power and would be unable to fend off an attack by China's People's Liberation Army (PLA).

China has stepped up its military pressure on Taiwan in recent weeks, including having dozens of PLA aircraft fly across the median line of the Taiwan Strait, which has put pressure on Taiwan's military to respond and maintain combat readiness.
