Premier Su Tseng-chang to stay in post

Taipei, Jan. 13 (CNA) Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) will continue to serve as the country's premier after President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) asked him to remain in the post earlier in the day, a Presidential Office spokesman said Monday.

Tsai asked Su to stay on after she won re-election and her ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) retained its majority in Saturday's presidential and legislative elections.

Su led his Cabinet to resign en masse Monday evening as is required by the country's Constitution following a legislative election in preparation for a new Legislature.

During Su's meeting with Tsai in the Presidential Office Monday noon, the president asked him to continue to serve as head of the country's executive branch to maintain stability, and Su agreed, according to spokesman Chang Chun-han (張惇涵).

Tsai had previously said at a press event after winning re-election Saturday that she expected to keep her executive team for her second term to maintain a level of stability amid rapidly changing domestic and international situations.

The 72-year-old Su took up the post in January 2019.

The DPP heavyweight served as chairman of the party from 2012 to 2014, as premier in 2006 and 2007, and as chief of staff to former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) in 2004.
