MAC discourages Taiwanese from attending Straits Forum in China

Taipei, May 30 (CNA) The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) on Thursday urged citizen of Taiwan not to attend the upcoming Straits Forum in China, which the council sees as part of Beijing's scheme to ultimately annex Taiwan through its "united front" strategy.
Since Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) laid out his goals for Taiwan's unification with China in January this year under Beijing's "one country, two systems" formula, China has been making every effort to achieve those goals through what it calls "democratic negotiations" via cross-Taiwan Strait exchanges, MAC Vice Chairman Chen Ming-chi (陳明祺) said in a regular press briefing.
The annual Straits Forum, slated for June 15-21 in Fujian's Xiamen City, is being used by China to drum up support among Taiwan's people and create an atmosphere conducive to its "one country, two systems" unification formula, according to Chen.
While people and groups from Taiwan are advised to not take part in the event, any Chinese personnel linked to the forum will not be permitted to enter Taiwan, if they attempt to visit this year, Chen said.
He also warned that Taiwanese groups and citizens are not permitted to sign agreements or memorandums of understanding, strike illegal deals, or forge alliances with Chinese authorities, in conflict with national interests.
That regulation also applies to public functionaries in the central and local governments and any affiliated companies, he said.
Applications by retired high-ranking government officials and active local government officials to participate in seminars in China that advocate the "one country, two systems" formula or that involve the so-called "democratic negotiations" will be turned down by Taiwan authorities, Chen said.
