U.S. congressmen introduce resolution reaffirming commitment to Taiwan

Washington, April 1 (CNA) A group of U.S. congressmen introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives Monday reaffirming the United States' commitment to Taiwan and the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), signed 40 years ago.

The resolution was jointly presented by Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Michael McCaul, Republican leader of the Foreign Affairs Committee; Brad Sherman, senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; and Ted Yoho, a ranking member of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

According to the resolution, the House of Representatives reaffirms that the TRA, signed into law April 10, 1979, along with the Six Assurances, are, and will remain, cornerstones of Taiwan-U.S. relations.

The Six Assurances are a set of assurances used to conduct relations between the U.S. and Taiwan agreed to by U.S. President Ronald Reagan in July 1982.

U.S. officials at all levels are encouraged to travel and meet with their counterparts in Taiwan, and for high-level Taiwan officials to visit the U.S. and meet with officials there, based on the Taiwan Travel Act, the resolution says.

It reiterates that the U.S. president should conduct regular transfers of defense articles to Taiwan consistent with Taiwan's national security requirements in accordance to prior legislation, including the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act of 2018.

It calls on the U.S. secretary of state to actively engage internationally in support of Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations engaged in addressing transnational threats and challenges such as those related to health, aviation security, and crime and terrorism.

It also recognizes Taiwan's partnership in combating global terrorism, including as a full partner in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, and in addressing other global challenges through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) and other such initiatives.
