Foreign ministry condemns China's efforts to belittle Taiwan

Taipei, May 26 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Saturday issued a statement, condemning China's demands for international airlines to change Taiwan's designation on their websites.

Such behavior will not help the positive development of cross-strait relations, but will only stir resentment among the people of Taiwan toward the Chinese government, the foreign ministry said.

MOFA was responding to a string of letters that China's Civil Aviation Administration sent to 60 American and other international airlines earlier this year, asking them to remove references to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as countries on their websites and in their marketing materials.

As an independent and sovereign nation, Taiwan and its people will not be subdued by any threats or intimidation, and such attempts will only further alienate Taiwan from China, the foreign ministry said in the statement.

The government continues to urge foreign airlines not to belittle Taiwan or damage its sovereignty and dignity by bowing to pressure from China, the ministry said.
