Taiwan urges Beijing to stop undermining cross-strait peace

Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Taiwan's Presidential Office has urged Beijing to "immediately stop" all behavior that is negatively affecting peaceful relations across the Taiwan Strait following the Dominican Republic's decision to cut ties with Taipei.

At a time when world players are making efforts in the region, including on the Korean Peninsula, to seek peace and stability through dialogue and reconciliation, China has been acting in the opposite way by flexing its military muscles and manipulating its "one China" policy, the office said in a statement Tuesday.

Bejing's behavior has raised tensions in the Taiwan Strait and in the region and "that's not what a responsible stakeholder should be doing," the statement said.

The Presidential Office condemned the actions of Beijing in offering financial aid to "lure and coerce" the Caribbean country to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The Republic of China (ROC) government "deeply regrets" the Dominican Republic's decision to switch ties in favor of the People's Republic of China, the statement said.

"The government will not bow to Beijing's pressure, but will make every effort to safeguard the nation's interests, to defend the sovereignty and dignity of the ROC, and to work with friends in international community to ensure regional peace and stability," it said.
