Taipei, Sept. 18 (CNA) The government on Monday denied a media report that said the military is planning to conduct live-fire surface-to-surface missile tests in response to flaring tensions in East Asia.

According to the Apple Daily, the Air Defense and Missile Command of the Republic of China Air Force has received an instruction to test-fire Tactical Shorebase Missiles for Fire Suppression (TSMFS) in the near future.

The decision has been made by the National Security Council and the Ministry of National Defense (MND) to ensure Taiwan's security at a time when recent missile tests by North Korea have created regional tensions, the paper said.

Both the Presidential Office and the MND, however, dismissed the report as "mere speculation" and totally groundless.

The Apple Daily cited a military expert as saying that TSMFS is a locally developed surface-to-surface cruise missile system that is more commonly known as the Hsiung Feng IIE.

The missile has a range of between 600 and 1,500 kilometers and can pose a threat to important military facilities on China's southeast coast, the paper said.
