Taipei, June 14 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) reiterated Wednesday that her administration will never give in to threats from China and that Taiwan will continue to play its due role in the international community.

Speaking at the weekly meeting of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) Central Standing Committee, Tsai said that Taiwan will stand firm in the face of pressure from Beijing and will not change its status in the international community, according to DPP spokeswoman Chiu Li-li (邱莉莉).

The establishment of diplomatic ties between Panama and China at the expense of Taiwan on Tuesday was perceived generally in the international community as a provocative action by Beijing that has unilaterally altered the cross-Taiwan Strait status quo, said Tsai, who serves concurrently as DPP chairwoman.

"This provocation does not only impact regional peace and stability, but also hurts the interactions and relations between the two sides of the strait," Tsai was quoted as saying.

Despite Beijing's constant suppression of Taiwan's international space and the current disadvantageous situation facing Taiwan in the international arena, Taiwan will not change its status in the international community, Tsai said.

"We will never compromise under threats and intimidation," she said.

Using its excellent soft power, Taiwan can develop substantial and solid relations with all countries of the world, allowing them to experience the value of exchanges with Taiwan, Tsai said.
