Military conducts live-fire rehearsal in Penghu

Taipei, May 9 (CNA) Taiwan's military, including the Army, Navy and Air Force, conducted its first live-fire rehearsal on the shores of Penghu County on Tuesday.

The event was a preview to the Han Kuang series of military exercises held to demonstrate the capability of the nation's armed forces in defending Taiwan's offshore islands.

Gen. Wang Shin-lung (王信龍), commander of the Republic of China Army who oversaw the rehearsal, commended the armed forces for achieving the day's objectives.

Air traffic from Magong Airport was briefly disrupted as a result of the rehearsal, with three flights in and out of Penghu delayed, affecting 792 passengers.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, the county's military base will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 10, 13-14, and 17. Visitors will be able to view some of the armed forces' latest weaponry, including the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, UH-60 Black Hawk, missiles and so forth.

The second stage of the Han Kuang military exercises, which is expected to involve live fire drills, will be held May 22-26.
