Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) Defense Minister Feng Shih-kuan (馮世寬) said Thursday that there was problem of a substance abuse in Taiwan's military.

Feng said he was deeply concerned about the discovery Monday of several packages of illegal drugs at Ching Chuan Kang air base in Taichung, central Taiwan, and that an investigation was in progress to determine the source.

The approximately 3,000 military personnel at the air base are being tested for drug use and so far 20 of them have tested positive, according to Feng.

More comprehensive testing will be carried to confirm whether they had indeed been taking illegal drugs, he said.

He told reporters that the use of illegal drugs was prohibited in Taiwan's military but there was no doubt that substance abuse was a problem.
