Taipei, Nov. 27 (CNA) Taiwan has been staying on top of and is aware of China's military activity, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Sunday, after six Chinese military planes flew near Japan's Okinawa Islands two days ago.

The military has been monitoring the country's surrounding waters and airspace closely to ensure national security, without being provocative or escalating conflicts, MND spokesman Chen Chung-chi (陳中吉) said.

According to Japan's public broadcaster NHK, the six Chinese aircraft flew north along the Pacific side of the Sakishima Islands before traveling between Okinawa's main island and Miyako Island and heading toward the East China Sea on Friday.

China's Air Force spokesman Shen Jinke (申進科) said Saturday that the flight was part of routine distant-sea exercises and was not targeted at any specific countries.
