Beijing, Nov. 2 (CNA) The 11th meeting between Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened in Beijing on Wednesday, with more than 200 people in attendance, including KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱).
Hung did not attend the opening ceremony in the morning, choosing instead to take part in afternoon discussions at two out of the forum's five panels which focussed on the subjects of politics, economics, culture, society and youth affairs.
Hung attended the panels on economics and youth affairs.
The two-day KMT-CPC forum, which has been held every year since 2006, was this year renamed the Cross-Strait Peace Development Forum. It was also organized by civic groups, a change to earlier years when it was dominated by the two political parties.
Hung deliberately chose not to attend the forum's opening ceremony and will not be present at the official closing of the event on Thursday, in line with the reduced role played by politics at the 2016 forum, according to the KMT, which lost power in Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections in January to the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party.
Before the forum opened, KMT Vice Chairman Steve Chan (詹啟賢), who heads the Taiwan delegation for the high-profile cross-strait event, met with Yu Zhengsheng (俞正聲), chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
