Taipei, Nov. 1 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has urged Beijing to recognize the existence of the Republic of China, Presidential Office spokesman Alex Huang (黃重諺) said Tuesday.

Tsai was responding to remarks by Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) that the "1992 consensus" must be the foundation for the development of exchanges across the Taiwan Strait and that China opposes Taiwan independence.

Xi, who is also leader of the Communist Party of China, made the remarks during a meeting with opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) in Beijing earlier in the day.

On the development of cross-strait relations, Tsai has made it clear that both sides should make greater efforts to promote exchanges and dialogue that are constructive and build peaceful and stable cross-strait relations that are persistent, Huang said.

Tsai also urged Beijing to recognize the strong belief in a democratic system among the Taiwanese people and stressed that the leaders on both sides of the strait should jointly work to create a mutually beneficial future, Huang said.

Cross-strait relations have cooled since Tsai took office May 20, due mainly to China's insistence that the "1992 consensus" must remain the political foundation for the development of cross-strait exchanges, and the Tsai administration's reluctance to accept that.

The "1992 consensus" refers to a tacit understanding reached in 1992 between Taiwan -- then under a Kuomintang government -- and China, that there is only one China, with both sides free to interpret what that means.
