Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) urged opposition Kuomintang Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) on Sunday to call on Beijing to "squarely face the fact that the Republic of China exists."

The DPP's Department of China Affairs made the appeal as the KMT chairwoman was leading a delegation of senior executives to China, where she is scheduled to meet with Xi Jinping, head of the Communist Party of China, in Beijing on Tuesday.

In a statement, DPP Department of China Affairs Director Chao Tien-lin (趙天麟) said his party was pleased to see the KMT delegation participating in a cross-strait peace and development forum, an event he termed as a "civilian exchange activity."

But Chao added that "no political strings should be attached to such exchanges."

Chao said all of the people in Taiwan are watching closely what Hung and her KMT colleagues do, and he suggested that they "raise Taiwan's mainstream public opinion" to their Chinese hosts.

KMT insiders said Hung may not directly raise the ROC issue with Xi in Beijing, but she will likely mention the title of the Republic of China as the country established by Dr. Sun Yat-sen when she visits Sun's mausoleum in Nanjing on Monday.

Hung will do so while speaking on the history of the founding of the ROC by Dr. Sun, the party sources said. Nanjing used to be the capital city of the ROC.
