Washington, Oct. 11 (CNA) The United States places great value and importance on Taiwan and China using a combination of creativity and patience to resolve their differences peacefully, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Daniel Russel said Tuesday.

Speaking at the Asia Architecture Conference held by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a U.S. think tank, Russel said the U.S. supports and appreciates President Tsai Ing-wen's (蔡英文) efforts to create dialogue with Beijing.

"It's not always easy," Russel said. "But we will continue to encourage both sides to think to the long term and work to promote programs, dialogue and interaction that creates confidence, that creates opportunity, and that creates better understanding."

However, Russel declined to comment when asked about Tsai's National Day address, during which she pledged to maintain the status quo in cross-strait relations and called for China to engage in dialogue with Taiwan.

He stressed, though, that the U.S. takes her speech very seriously and appreciates her extending of goodwill toward China and her desire for communication.
