Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) The government has lodged a serious protest with Hong Kong over its decision to deny entry to certain Taiwanese nationals, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said Thursday.

The government hopes that Hong Kong will treat people with different opinions from its own with a positive and tolerant attitude, so as not to damage Taiwanese people's impression of Hong Kong and undermine the good relations between the two sides, MAC Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) said.

Taiwan has always been open-minded about visits by Hong Kong citizens and has never restricted any of them from entering Taiwan just because they hold different opinions, he pointed out.

The MAC also urges China to honor its "one country, two systems" commitment to Hong Kong, he said.

Since ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Chiu Chih-wei (邱志偉) was denied entry to Hong Kong early this month, there has been speculation that Beijing has exerted pressure on Hong Kong to block members of the pro-independence party from visiting the special administrative region.

According to Chiu Chui-cheng, some Taiwanese citizens invited to attend a conference held by a non-government group in Hong Kong were also denied access recently.
