Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) A top Taiwan official in charge of Chinese affairs on Thursday called on Beijing to open its doors wider to Taipei for communication and dialogue on issues covered by the agreements signed between the two sides.
Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) said an institutionalized mechanism for cross-strait negotiations is of great importance to the interests and wellbeing of the people of Taiwan and China.
Taiwan's doors for communication and negotiation with China will be always wide open, Chiu said, urging China to work with Taiwan to create more opportunities for bilateral communication.
Chiu was responding to a comment by Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office under China's State Council, who said Wednesday China will continue to honor the 23 economic cooperation agreements that have been signed with since 2008, although talks between the two sides are currently suspended.
However, regarding the follow-up agreements under the Taiwan-China Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) of 2010, "it is impossible to open the doors without the '1992 consensus' as a foundation," Zhang said in response to questions raised during a meeting with nine Taiwanese business leaders in Hangzhou.
In response, Chiu called on China to help improve the mechanism for communication and contact so as to fulfill the 21 cross-strait agreements already in effect and to protect the interests of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Chiu also said the government of Taiwan will continue to push for negotiations on ECFA follow-up issues, including a cross-strait agreement on trade in goods.
