Taipei, March 30 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou urged bipartisan cooperation and reconciliation to lead the country through future challenges in the open portion of his meeting with President-elect Tsai Ing-wen at Taipei Guest House on Wednesday.
Speaking before the two met behind closed doors to discuss the transition of power, Ma congratulated Tsai on being elected Taiwan's first female president and he called for full bipartisan collaboration for the good of the people.
Ma said that after having served as president for eight years, he would do his best to help ensure a seamless power transition and voiced support for a legislative proposal to institutionalize power transfer procedures under the terms of the Republic of China's (Taiwan's) Constitution.
It was their first meeting since Tsai, chairwoman of the
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was elected president in January.
Ma is a member of the Kuomintang, which lost both the presidency and its legislative majority in the Jan. 16 elections.
Tsai will be sworn in as president on May 20, when Ma steps down after completing his two terms in office.
Following opening remarks by the two on Wednesday, Ma and Tsai were to meet for about an hour behind closed doors to discuss the transition of power and exchange views on major diplomatic and cross-Taiwan Strait issues.
