Most people in Taiwan in favor of cross-strait status quo

Taipei, March 29 (CNA) An 86.7 percent of people in Taiwan are in favor of maintaining the status quo of the relations between the two sides of Taiwan Strait, according to the results of a survey released on Tuesday by the Cabinet-level Council Mainland Affairs Council (MAC).
And 81.9 percent of those surveyed said that they support the government to continue to uphold the existing policies of "no unification, no independence and no use of force" in dealing with the cross-strait ties under the Constitution of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The survey also found that 72.7 percent of the respondents do not agree with the claim by China that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to "one China".
Up to 78.6 percent of the surveyed believed that if mainland China can recognize the reality that the two sides of the strait are governed separately and can respect Taiwan's public will, it will definitely contribute to a healthy development of the cross-strait ties.
Only 20.9 percent of the surveyed considered that the government of mainland China is friendly toward the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), while a 59.3 percent hold a contrary view.
The survey showed 34.1 percent of the respondents said that the Chinese government is friendly toward the people of Taiwan, against 50.6 percent who have the contrary opinion.
With regard to the speed of bilateral exchanges between the two sides, 45.1 percent said that it is appropriate, while 21.5 percent considered that it too fast and 21 percent saw it as too slow.
On the future of the cross-strait ties, 37.5 percent of the respondents believed that there will be no changes, while 25.7 percent said that the relations will be worse and 15.9 percent saw a better development.
The survey was conducted March 18-22 by the Election Study Center of National Chengchi University, commissioned by the MAC, with telephone interview of people aged 20 and more in Taiwan. A total of 1,108 valid samples were collected, and the margin of error was plus or minus 2.94 percentage points with a confidence level of 95 percent.
