Taipei, March 11 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced Friday a list of 14 military officers to be punished over the controversial handling of a case that led to accusations of an illegal search by military police.

They include Lt. Gen. Wen Chen-kuo (聞振國), head of the Political Warfare Bureau, who was given two demerits, and Lt. Gen. Hsu Chang (許昌), commander of the Military Police Command, who was given one admonition, according to the MND.

The uproar came about when a woman surnamed Wei accused military police of conducting an illegal search of her home in late February related to her father's collection of documents from the White Terror era dating back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Wei's father caught the attention of investigators because he put the documents up for auction online, describing them as 'classified.'

On March 6, the Military Police Command rejected Wei's accusation of an illegal search, stating that her father voluntarily cooperated in the investigation and handed over the three documents being advertised.

It said the military police's meeting with Wei and their visit to his home was videotaped and showed that no search was conducted.

Premier Simon Chang (張善政) has questioned the use of military police to investigate civilians because any contact with civilians should be made through prosecutors and said haveingWei's father sign a form stating that he agreed to cooperate with the military police's search was not an appropriate practice.

Chang also said obtaining a search warrant first would have been a better approach.

The MND apologized Monday for the controversy stirred up by the military police's handling of the case and said it would fully cooperate with a Taipei Prosecutors' Office investigation into what happened.

At a news conference held Friday, Wen and Hsu again apologized to the public over the incident.
