Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) The Ministry of Foreign Affair (MOFA) said Tuesday that Taiwan's existing cooperation projects with its allies and the countries with which it maintains friendly relations in the absence of diplomatic links will not be changed despite the upcoming power transfer.

The message was delivered to around 80 foreign ambassadors and representatives to Taiwan earlier in the day as they were briefed on the results of the country's just-concluded presidential and legislative elections held Jan. 16, the MOFA said in a statement.

During the briefing, the ministry said that the Republic of China's foreign policies are consistent and continuous, and as a result, there won't be any changes to the ROC's existing cooperation projects and obligations to foreign countries.

To the foreign envoys and diplomats stationed in Taipei, the MOFA underlined the ROC government's constant efforts to cement and strengthen friendly cooperative relations with their countries, the statement said.

The briefing was divided into two sessions, with the first attended by the diplomats of the countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and the second attended by the representatives of the nations which currently have no formal links with Taiwan, according to the MOFA.

The ruling Kuomintang suffered a crushing defeat in the elections, not only losing the presidency to the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP's) Tsai Ing-wen, but also its long-held majority to the DPP in the Legislative Yuan. Tsai will assume office on May 20. The new Legislature will be sworn in on Feb. 1.
