Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) said Sunday that he will resign formally from the leadership of the party on Monday, after the KMT suffered a crushing loss in the Saturday's presidential and legislative elections.

Following his announcement Saturday of his resignation, Chu said he will tender his resignation as chairman Monday at a provisional meeting of the KMT Central Standing Committee, which will select an acting chairman to serve until a new one is elected.

According to a United Daily News report on Sunday, Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) and Deputy Legislative Speaker Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) are possible candidates for the KMT chairmanship.

The next step for the KMT is to return the grassroots to cultivate talent and recruit young members, said Chu, who was defeated in the presidential election by Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) by a wide margin.

On Saturday, the KMT lost not only the presidency but also its long-held majority in the 113-seat Legislature, winning just 35 seats.
