Cabinet to resign following KMT election defeat

Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) Premier Mao Chi-kuo (毛治國) said Saturday he has tendered his resignation to President Ma Ying-jeou and will not accept any attempt to have him remain in his post.

The move came after the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) lost both the presidential and legislative elections.

Mao said he will lead his Cabinet in resigning en masse as soon as possible so that the president can appoint a new premier to form a new Cabinet before the new Legislature is sworn in on Feb. 1, in accordance with constitutional precedent.

Mao, who took the premier job in late 2014 following the KMT's crushing defeat in local government elections, said he hopes the country's political leaders will seize the opportunity to set a new precedent of naming a member of the majority party in the Legislature as premier.

He noted that having a majority party premier is consistent with the Constitution's spirit of 'dual heads of state' -- with the president in charge of foreign and cross-strait affairs and foreign policy, and the premier responsible for the executive branch of government.

A new premier from the new majority party in the Legislature will also increase Taiwan's ability to face the tough global economic and political challenges, Mao said.

The new president will not be sworn in until May 20, while the new Legislature will be launched Feb. 1. The government will thus be left in a position as a caretaker government for nearly four months.
