Taipei, April 18 (CNA) A new 3,000-ton patrol and rescue vessel belonging to the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) was launched in Kaohsiung Friday.

The vessel, named 'Kaohsiung' (CG-129), entered the water in a ceremony held at the shipyard of Jong Shyn Shipbuilding Co.

It was the second 3,000-ton Coast Guard vessel to be launched in recent months. The other one, named 'Yilan,' was launched in January and is scheduled to begin service in June after extensive sea trials.

CGA Deputy Minister Yu Ming-shi, who presided over the launching ceremony, said the 'Kaohsiung' is expected to begin service in November after also undergoing sea trials.

It will be responsible for patrolling waters south of Taiwan, including the South China Sea, to protect Taiwanese fishermen operating in the region, Yu said.

The 'Yilan' and 'Kaohsiung' are the largest ships owned by the CGA.

They are 119 meters long, 15.2 meters wide and 8.2 meters deep and are each equipped with four main engines.

They have a maximum speed of 24 knots and a maximum range of 10,000 nautical miles. They are equipped with 40mm cannons, 20mm cannons, T75 machine guns, and water cannons.
