Taipei, April 8 (CNA) The military denied Tuesday that it will cut its political warfare units and that Military Police School students will be sent to serve in the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) after graduating, as part of a new military downsizing program.
Reports of cutting political warfare departments and sending graduates from the Military Police School to serve in the CGA are untrue, said Ministry of National Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he at a regular news briefing.
The Marine Police Bureau and the Defense Ministry's Coast Guard Command are among the agencies integrated in the CGA, which was established in 2000.
More than 8,000 soldiers and military officials are serving in the Coast Patrol Directorate General under the CGA, according to a recent report in the Chinese-language China Times Weekly, which said graduates from the Military Police School were transferred to the CGA earlier this year.
Details of the new streamlining program are still under review and the ministry will make an announcement once they are finalized, Luo said in response to questions on the issue.
The Military Police School was reorganized to the Military Police Training Center April 1 and Luo said this was part of the Military Police's organizational adjustments. He did not elaborate.
According to a draft plan, the military will undergo a new downsizing program from 2015 to 2019, which will cut the number of troops to between 170,000 and 190,000 from the current level of approximately 215,000, the ministry has said.
This is part of the military's efforts to adjust the organization of Taiwan's defense apparatus and restructure the armed forces, the ministry said.
