Taipei, March 5 (CNA) China still poses a military threat to Taiwan and is continuously boosting its combat capability to a point where it can mount a full attack on the island, according to a new report submitted Wednesday.
China's combat capabilities are expected to have reached that level by 2020, according to the report handed to the Legislature's Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee by the Ministry of National Defense.
Defense Minister Yen Ming is scheduled to attend a hearing on the issue the following day.
The report noted that China has not renounced the use of force against Taiwan and has been developing and deploying various types of new advanced weapons.
Despite the increasing threat from China, a lieutenant-general based on Kinmen, a Taiwan-controlled island group close to southern China, gave an assurance that safeguarding the Republic of China is not a problem.
Although the country is cutting back its military, 'there is no problem regarding our ability to safeguard the security of the country and Kinmen,' said Pan Jia-yu, commander of the Kinmen Defense Command.
