Washington, Nov. 27 (CNA) Taipei has conveyed its position on China's newly declared air defense identification zone (ADIZ) to Washington, Taiwan's deputy representative to the United States said Wednesday.

The U.S. government, in return, has expressed its understanding of Taiwan's stance, according to Leo Lee.

On Nov. 23, China claimed the right to identify, monitor and possibly take military action against aircraft that enter its newly demarcated ADIZ in the East China Sea, which covers the disputed Diaoyutai Islands.

In response, Taiwan's National Security Council (NSC) issued a statement reaffirming Taiwan's sovereignty over the islands and asking all sides to prevent a rise in tensions in the region.

Lee said that besides the U.S. executive branch, the NSC's statement has also been sent to members of the U.S. Congress, major media organizations and various scholars.

On the submission of flight plans by Taiwanese airlines to China's civil aviation agency, Lee said Taiwan is doing so in accordance with international norms and regulations. The move has nothing to do with the question of whether Taiwan is recognizing China's ADIZ, he said.
