Taipei, Nov. 15 (CNA) Premier Jiang Yi-huah expressed 'deep shock and regret' Friday after The Gambia announced its decision to break off diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The announcement was 'abrupt' and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is looking into the matter, Jiang told legislators.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh released a statement through his office Thursday saying that the diplomatic ties between his country and the ROC would end immediately.

'This decision has been taken in our strategic national interest. We are proud that we have been a very strong and reliable partner of the Republic of China for the past 18 years, the results of which are there for every Taiwanese to see,' the statement said.

Gambian Ambassador Alhaji Ebrima N.H. Jarjou was summoned by the MOFA Friday morning over the matter.

Asked by reporters if The Gambia is prepared to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, Jarjou said he had no idea and could not answer that question.
