Taipei, Sept. 12 (CNA) The government's goal of establishing an all-volunteer military cannot be realized until 2016 because of snags in manpower recruitment, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Thursday.
The project was originally scheduled for completion at the end of 2014, with a formal launch at the start of 2015.
Because personnel recruitment has fallen short of expectations, however, the all-volunteer military launch date must be postponed to 2016, the ministry said.
The program got underway in 2012.
The deferral will not affect male citizens born after Jan. 1, 1994, it said, adding that they will only be required to undergo a four-month military training program.
Under the original plan, males born before Dec. 31, 1993 were supposed to perform one year of alternative military service. But under the revised plan, they will now have to perform one year of regular military service.
The adjustment plan was approved by the Cabinet earlier in the day.
