Taipei, July 9 (CNA) The military will start a five-day computer-assisted war game July 15 that will simulate an all-out Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2017 preluded by a surprise attack, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Tuesday.
The war game will be part of the Han Kuang 29 military exercise, the ministry said, adding that a live-fire phase of the large-scale annual exercise already concluded in April.
"The upcoming war game is primarily aimed at testing the military's combined command and control mechanism," said Maj. Gen. Tseng Fu-hsing, a senior official at the MND's Office of the Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Operations and Planning.
The war game, which will last for five days and four nights, is designed in reference to China's military build-up program and regional strategic situation, Tseng said.
The computer-aided drill also takes into account China's military doctrine and possible combat tactics against Taiwan, including a military blockade, armed assault and landing operations, he explained.
"The drill will test 32 items, including the application of information and communication technology in command operations, strategic communications, and Internet and psychological warfare strategies, as well as coordination in air defense, joint operations and integration of intelligence collection," Tseng added.
While relations across the Taiwan Strait have improved in recent years, Tseng said, China's threat to Taiwan's national security has not been alleviated.
"In the face of mainland China's rapid military development, we need to hone our combat skills and strategies," he added.
