Taipei, June 23 (CNA) A reactor at Taiwan's second nuclear power plant will be back in service later Sunday following an automatic shutdown Friday, according to the Taiwan Power Company.
Tsai Fu-feng, a spokesman for the company, said the number one unit at the power plant in New Taipei City restarted operations at 1.41 a.m. Sunday, with the approval of the Atomic Energy Council, and is expected to be reconnected to the national power grid later in the day.
The Atomic Energy Council is the country's supreme nuclear watchdog.
The reactor automatically shut down on Friday at noon after a warning system detected an abnormally large electrical current, said Tsai, citing a preliminary report by the company.
He added that the shutdown is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the nuclear power system, it is not a nuclear accident.
The mass-circulated United Daily News said Sunday that the shutdown, which is the first this year, caused a shortage of 1 MWt in northern Taiwan's power supply, and Taipower had to transfer power from southern Taiwan to fill the gap.
