Taipei, May 30 (CNA) The Cabinet approved a proposal on Thursday to amend the National Security Act to better prevent hacker attacks on government websites.
The proposed amendment will be sent to the Legislature for deliberation and approval.
It is the first time that Taiwan's national security efforts are being extended to the virtual world, mainly because of growing concern over possible attacks via the Internet on government websites, Cabinet officials said.
Among the proposed amendments are provisions that encourage members of the public to inform government authorities of suspected cyberspace attacks, the officials said.
The identities of the informants will be protected and cash rewards will be given in cases where the information proves helpful to thwarting cyber-threats, the officials said.
The proposed provisions also require government agencies to step up online anti-espionage measures that include punishments for failing to carry out preventive work.
