Taipei, May 29 (CNA) A group of legislators is scheduled to visit the Ministry of National Defense's (MND's) electronic warfare unit Thursday to get a better idea of its operations, a member of the group said Wednesday.
The Legislature wants to get a firsthand look at how the military will respond in the event of a cyber attack, said opposition Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Hsiao Bi-khim, convener of the legislative Foreign and National Defense Committee.
She said that although the MND and the National Security Bureau have briefed the Legislature on the preparedness of the information and electronic warfare command center against cyber attacks, the legislators would like to see if there are any areas that need strengthening.
Defense Minister Kao Hua-chu had said that the center has three squadrons and that the ministry will add one more to strengthen the unit's cyber warfare combat and defense capabilities.
Military officials said that in addition to expanding its cyber teams, the government is also planning to include the electronic warfare unit in future military exercises by the Army, Navy and Air Force.
There are currently more than 3,000 people in the three cyber squadrons, according to Lt. Gen. Liao Jung-hsing, deputy defense minister.
In comparison, there are more than 100,000 people in China's cyber warfare forces, operating with an estimated annual budget of US$80 million, according to Taiwanese national security officials.
