Taipei, May 29 (CNA) A Taiwanese fishing boat registered in the port of Suao in the northeastern county of Yilan was detained by the Japanese authorities Wednesday on suspicion of fishing on Japan's side of a temporary enforcement line in the two countries' overlapping waters, a Suao fishermen's association said that day.

The association said the 50-ton Yi Sheng No.12 was detained about 25 nautical miles off Yonaguni Island in the early hours of the morning after departing from Suao May 26.

The owner of the vessel has been told by the Japanese authorities that if he wants his boat back, he will have to pay 4.3 million Japanese yen (US$42,269) to cover the cost of bail, fines and bank transaction fees, according to the association.

The boat was carrying skipper Ke Ching-kuo and six Indonesian crew members when it was detained.

The association said it was helping the captain to handle the matter and added that it was unclear whether the boat itself trespassed into Japanese waters or whether only its fishing gear drifted over the line.
