Taipei, Nov. 9 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou pledged Friday to continue to promote negotiations and cooperation with mainland China to consolidate peace and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait.

Among the most important issues on the government's agenda is expanding and deepening cross-strait exchanges, Ma said during a conference held to mark the 20th anniversary of the "1992 consensus."

Others include promoting the exchange of representative offices between the two sides and conducting a comprehensive review of the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area, he said.

"After these tasks are accomplished, cross-strait interactions can definitely go beyond their current model, laying a firmer and more lasting groundwork for a peaceful and prosperous future," he said, without elaborating.

According to Ma, the "1992 consensus," which allows the two sides to agree to disagree on the meaning of "one China," has provided a basis for mutual trust and is a crucial factor in ensuring cross-strait peace.

The consensus is consistent with the Republic of China Constitution and represents the spirit of facing reality, putting aside differences and resolving problems pragmatically, he said.

Such an understanding has been taken very seriously by both sides of the strait, as evidenced by the fact that Chinese President Hu Jintao also mentioned the "1992 consensus" during his remarks at the opening of 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Thursday, Ma said.

Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Lin Join-sane, who serves as Taiwan's chief negotiator with China, noted that Taipei and Beijing resumed dialogue in 2008 on the basis of the "1992 consensus," leading to 18 cross-strait agreements since then.
