Taipei, June 18 (CNA) The Atomic Energy Council approved Monday a proposal by Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) to resume operations of a nuclear reactor found to have defective anchor bolts earlier this year, after the company's restoration work and subsequent safety checks passed a council review.

Taipower spokesman Roger Lee said the company will have the reactor running again once it has completed the necessary preparations.

Taipower, the operator of the country's three existing nuclear plants, found fractures or cracks in seven of the 120 anchor bolts in one of the two reactors at its No. 2 nuclear power plant in New Taipei during a routine check in mid-March.

The council said the agency approved the proposal after the company repaired the defective bolts and subjected them to safety checks to make sure the reactor can continue to operate safely for another 18 months.
