Taipei, May 20 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou was sworn into office for his second term on Sunday, vowing to achieve peace, justice and happiness for Taiwan and ensure continued improved ties with China.
In his inaugural address, Ma vowed to boost Taiwan's economic growth, social justice, environmental protection, culture and education during his next four years.
Ma's re-inauguration, however, was marked by protests in Taipei against the government's policies, including moves to raise fuel and electricity prices and to allow imports of U.S. beef containing residues of the leanness-enhancing drug ractopamine.
Ma, who was re-elected in January, is scheduled to hold an international news conference later in the day.
