Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan will be rated in a new index on government defense integrity compiled by the Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) that gauges 80 countries, the Taiwan branch of the global organization against corruption said recently.

To gather data for the "Government Defence Integrity Index" report, Mark Pyman, who is responsible for the project, visited several agencies under Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense May 10-12, the group's Taiwan branch said in a statement on its website.

The ministry will work with related government agencies to provide information for the assessment, ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he told CNA on Sunday.

Facing China's military threat, Taiwan has long relied heavily on certain countries such as the United States to procure arms and has been criticized for a lack of transparency in arms deals, TI's Taiwan branch said in explaining the importance of Taiwan's inclusion in the integrity index.

The branch hoped that the evaluation will play a part in helping Taiwan improve the transparency of its arms procurement procedures.

To compile the report, which is set to be released in November, Transparency International solicits opinions from government officials and experts in the defense and security industries.
