Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Two overhauled Osprey-class coastal minehunters that the United States agreed to sell to Taiwan in 2010 are scheduled to be delivered in the middle of this year, the Ministry of National Defense said Tuesday.

A Republic of China naval team traveled to the U.S. over a year ago to help recover the two minehunters built by Northrop Grumman during the 1990s that had already been decommissioned and mothballed.

The two vessels were included in a US$6.4 billion arms package for Taiwan that was passed by the U.S. government and Congress in January 2010.

The ships, equipped with high-precision sonar and remotely operated minehunting vehicles, are expected to significantly beef up Taiwan's self-defense capability in coastal areas, the Defense Ministry said.
