Beijing, Jan. 14 (CNA) China will take further steps to promote peace with Taiwan based on both sides' acknowledgment of the "1992 consensus," a Beijing official said Saturday after President Ma Ying-jeou was elected to a second term.

Beijing has "taken note of the election outcome" in Taiwan, said Yang Yi, a spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, at a press conference shortly after Ma's victory speech in Taipei.

"Based on the 1992 consensus and our opposition to Taiwan's independence," China is "willing to continue to work with various sectors in Taiwan" to "further advance the peaceful development of cross-strait relations," he said.

The "1992 consensus" refers to a tacit cross-strait understanding that there is only one China, with each side free to interpret the meaning of the phrase.

Relations between Taiwan and China have improved significantly since Ma took office in 2008.
