Taipei, Dec. 22 (CNA) Taiwan's army said Thursday it would tighten security at military bases nationwide, one day after a bloody civilian-military brawl at a military facility on the outlying island of Kinmen.

The army will conduct a thorough review of security measures at all military bases and make necessary improvements, Lieutenant General Huang Yi-bing, deputy commander of the army, told a Ministry of National Defense (MND) news conference.

The army will also enhance the training of its personnel in dealing with emergencies, he added, referring to the Kinmen incident which ended with nine military personnel being injured after civilians broke into the compound.

During the news conference, Huang bowed to apologize for the incident, which he described as a "simple case" of revenge involving friends of a soldier who had been upset by a punishment meted out by his superiors.

Asked whether military personnel could use their weapons in the event of violent attacks, Huang said they could fire a blank as a deterrent, but if that did not work, they could use live rounds.

"It is the military's responsibility to safeguard the country and ensure the security of military sites," Huang said. (By Elaine Hou) ENDITEM/npw
