Taipei, Dec. 13 (CNA) The United States supports Taiwan in its bid to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to allow it to make further contributions to global nuclear safety and security issues, a visiting high-ranking U.S. official said Tuesday.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman, the highest-ranking official from Washington to have visited Taipei in over a decade, said the U.S. has long been a supporter of Taiwan's participation in the IAEA, "including its participation in technical meetings on nuclear safety and security."
Poneman, on the second day of a three-day visit to Taiwan, made the remarks during a speech at National Taiwan University.
Following the speech, the U.S. official met with President Ma Ying-jeou. He was also scheduled to call on senior government officials and business leaders.
Poneman is also likely to tour Taiwan's nuclear power facilities during his stay.
The visit is aimed at promoting greater public and private sector cooperation between the two sides in the areas of scientific research, nuclear energy and renewable energy technologies, according to the American Institute in Taiwan, the de-facto American embassy in the absence of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and the U.S.
