Taipei, Nov. 14 (CNA) Taiwan's armed forces staged a rehearsal Monday for a military drill that will be held for the first time on the Chia Tung Highway Strip in southern Taiwan as part of joint combat training.

Fighter jets and helicopters, including F-16, M-2000, IDF and E2-K models, made reconnaissance flights over the area earlier in the day but their flight path had to be altered slightly because of poor visibility, according to the army.

The highway strip in Pingtung County will be used as a forward base on Nov. 17 to provide supplies of fuel and ammunition for the jets during the Chang Ching No. 12 training exercise that is being held Nov. 14-18.

It is the first time that a military drill is being held on the expressway that was built 24 years ago.

The army prepared the highway section a month ago, clearing potential obstacles such as street lamps, utility poles and trees.

The joint training exercise is the first of its kind in 20 years. Its biggest feature this year is the participation all three branches of the military.
