Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou on Sunday accused opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen of constantly changing her China policy, which he said could jeopardize Taiwan's future.

Ma, who is seeking re-election in the Jan. 14 presidential election, said Tsai dismissed the cross-strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) last year as a poison to Taiwan's economy but now has said she would continue the trade deal if elected.

"Why has she changed so quickly?" Ma said at the launch of his national election campaign headquarters in Taipei.

The president also took the opportunity to hit back at Tsai's claims that his idea of a possible cross-strait peace pact would denigrate Taiwan's sovereignty.

Ma said Tsai also vowed to establish a framework for peaceful and stable interactions between Taiwan and China in her election platforms.

"Why is it OK for her to raise the idea while my idea is 'dangerous'?" Ma told some 10,000 supporters.

Ma also rejected repeated accusations by Tsai that he was selling out Taiwan to China while charging that Tsai's China policy was not clear to the public.

"Most people in Taiwan are familiar with my cross-strait policy of no unification, no independence and no use of force," he said.

In response, Tsai said her concerns over the peace accord are based on whether Taiwan's sovereignty can be protected and why Ma raised the issue when the election was less than three months away. (By Hao Hsueh-chin and Elaine Hou) ENDITEM/ls
