Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) The government has allocated a total of NT$317.55 billion (US$10.45 billion) as defense budget for 2012, according to a budget plan that has been delivered to the Legislative Yuan for approval.

The 2012 budget is up NT$22.92 billion from the 2011 figure, defense officials said Tuesday. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) is scheduled to explain the budget plan to the legislature's Foreign and National Defense Committee the following day.

According to the MND's written report on the planned budget, the ministry has allocated NT$57.26 billion for major investment projects, including a contract for the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missile system, an upgrade of its F-16 A/B fighter fleet, and an upgrade of the locally developed indigenous defense fighters.

In 2012, the ministry also plans to launch an investment project aimed at developing and building high-performance warships while continuing a plan to purchase submarine-hunting aircraft, it said.

Of the total budget, NT$155.49 billion will be for personnel costs, up NT$15.5 billion from the 2011 budget. The MND explained that the funding will mostly be used to realize its policy of adopting both conscription and voluntary recruitment systems at the same time, as well as funding a planned pay adjustment for military personnel.
