Washington, Sept. 11 (CNA) Taiwan would not rule out any possibilities that could lead to peace across the Taiwan Strait, as long as they are in the country's interests, President Ma Ying-jeou's top campaign aide said in the U.S. on Sunday.
Possible initiatives such as a cross-strait peace accord should be considered only if the Republic of China's sovereignty, its national dignity and its people's interests would not be compromised, said King Pu-tsung, executive director of the Ma's election campaign.
Answering a reporter's question at an international news conference on the probability of President Ma visiting China if re-elected, King said anything was possible as long as it was conducive to Taiwan's interests.
"We would consider all possibilities as long as they are good for Taiwan, do not run counter to the people's interest and do not hurt the ROC's sovereignty," said King, a member of a visiting delegation from Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT).
However, King stressed that he was not in charge of cross-strait affairs and was only stating his personal views.
The KMT delegation, led by Legislative Yuan Deputy Speaker Tseng Yung-chuan, arrived in Washington, D.C. Saturday for a 12-day visit aimed at promoting Taiwan-U.S. ties and drumming up support for Ma's re-election bid.
Meanwhile, during an interview with Chinese & American News, a Washington-based bilingual television news channel, King said President Ma and his running mate Premier Wu Den-yih will be on the campaign trail later in September to promote "Taiwan's Golden Decade" project.
Under the project, King said, pressing issues will be efficiently addressed, including narrowing gap between rich and poor, seeking to lower property prices to alleviate homebuyers' "sense of deprivation," reforming the national health insurance program, improving nuclear power safety and accelerating development of green energies.
