Taipei, Aug. 4 (CNA) The military has taken many steps to ensure the security of its computer networks, Ministry of National Defense (MND) officials said Thursday.

The officials were responding to reports that U.S. computer security company McAfee Inc. has discovered vast cyberattacks that have targeted more than 70 government entities, nonprofit groups and corporations around the world to steal vast quantities of data.

According to the McAfee report, some organizations that have fallen victim to the attacks dating from mid-2006 are Taiwanese.

Citing the report, a local newspaper said China might be behind the attacks that have targeted organizations in 14 countries, including the United States, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Speaking at a news conference, MND spokesman Lo Shao-ho said the military's computer systems are kept under around-the-clock monitoring to ensure security.

Moreover, Lo said, the military has long adopted an insular system to separate military networks from civilian ones out of concern for defense information safety.

Wang Teh-pen, an MND division chief in charge of information and communication security, said the ministry has adopted many strategies, including constant renewal of protective measures, to reinforce its cyber-security. (By Emmanuelle Tzeng and Sofia Wu) ENDITEM/J
