Taipei, June 30 (CNA) Former President Lee Teng-hui was indicted Thursday on charges of embezzling state funds during his tenure in office from 1988 through 2000.

Also indicted was Liu Tai-ying, founder of the Taiwan Research Institute, the Special Investigation Division (SID) under the Supreme Prosecutors Office said.

Lee and Liu are accused of having embezzled some US$7.79 million in national security funds when Lee was in office.

The duo were indicted in accordance with the Anti-Corruption Act, the SID said in a statement. The division was scheduled to hold a news conference later in the day to give some further background to the case.

The Taipei Prosecutors Office began to investigate suspected misuse of a secret state security fund in 2003. At the time, Hsu Ping-chiang, then-head of the National Security Bureau's accounting department, was indicted on corruption charges, but he was later acquitted.
